| Man admits to killing during party game | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 7:04:01 AM by Blog57 Team | | JACKSON, Mich., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- A Michigan man who said during a party game the stupidest thing he had ever done was "shot a man in the head" has been charged with murder. Jerry Rose, 29, was arraigned Friday in U.S. District Court in Jackson (Mich.) for murder and armed robbery in the death of 60-year-old Edgar Hawkes last March, the Jackson Citizen-Patriot reported. Rose's former girlfriend tipped off police that he made the admission while playing a "What's-the-stupidest-thing-you've-ever-done?" game, the newspaper said. Hawkes' wife and their 14-year-old granddaughter found him shot to death at the bottom of his basement stairs when they returned home from shopping on March 14. A large amount of cash and a .22-caliber rifle were missing from the house.... | |

| | | Search for body of missing party-goer resumes | | Posted Tuesday, October 31, 2006 3:00:01 AM by Blog57 Team | | GILFORD, N.H. New Hampshire Fish and Game is searching today for the body of a 45-year-old man who fell off the Mount Washington cruise ship during a weekend party. Marine Patrol says James Slyvestre of Hooksett fell overboard into Lake Winnipesaukee during a Halloween party around ten o'clock Saturday night. Strong winds, driving rain and darkness hampered rescue efforts that night. Lieutenant Jim Goss says conditions weren't much better on Sunday as winds hit more than 50 miles per hour, whipping up waves and endangering search crews. With water temperatures in the 50s, searchers said anyone in the water would be overcome by hypothermia in a matter of minutes. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. | | | Hague: on Party Change | | Posted Sunday, October 01, 2006 10:58:36 PM by Blog57 Team | | "Well, there we are: a centre-right leader who's changed his party, appealed to his country and defeated a left wing government in power for three terms. And isn't it great to see from David Davis's superb speech the unity of purpose and personnel that our party now enjoys. Our leadership election was so successful that both the other parties wanted one too. Now Labour's never ends, and the Lib Dems wish they'd never had one. And I will tell you this: when I look around the Shadow Cabinet table, and I listen to the canny thoughts of David Davis, the down-to-earth wisdom of Liam Fox, the sharp insights of George Osborne and the brilliant visions of Oliver Letwin and David Willetts - to name but a few - I have never been more convinced that we can win. And when I go to meet people around Britain - such as the woman I met in a deprived area of Wakefield last week, who said 'please give us some pride in our country again' - I have never been more sure that people need us to win.... | |

| | | Amaranth Transfers All Energy Trades to Third Party (Update2) | | Posted Thursday, September 21, 2006 11:01:25 PM by Blog57 Team | | Sept. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Amaranth Advisors LLC, the hedge fund whose wrong-way bets lost about $4.6 billion this month, reached an agreement to transfer all of its energy trades to an unidentified third party, according to a letter sent to investors. Nicholas Maounis, Amaranth's founder, said in his letter, a copy of which was obtained by Bloomberg News, that more details will follow ``shortly.'' The Greenwich, Connecticut-based firm was in negotiations with Citadel Investment Group LLC as of late yesterday, two people with knowledge of those talks said. Amaranth was forced to unload the trades after swings in natural-gas prices last week turned it into the biggest hedge fund meltdown since Long-Term Capital Management LP's 1998 collapse. By transferring the bets, Amaranth would stem its losses and the new investor would be at risk of any further declines in the gas market.... | |

| | | Italy in party mood for Lithuania qualifier | | Posted Sunday, September 03, 2006 7:00:04 AM by Blog57 Team | | Italy's opening Euro 2008 qualifier against Lithuania in Naples on Saturday promises to be as much a welcome back party for the World Cup winners as a competitive football match. The Italy team that lost 2-0 to Croatia in Livorno earlier this month was a second-string side, barely recognisable from the one that beat France in the final in Germany on July 9. This weekend's Group B game at the San Paolo stadium will be different, marking the return of the likes of Fabio Cannavaro, Gianluigi Buffon and Gennaro Gattuso. That not all the world champions are back in the squad is due to the late start of the Italian domestic season, which has been delayed until September 9 by legal battles surrounding the Serie A match-fixing scandal. Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has left out some of his best and most experienced players -- including strikers Luca Toni, Alessandro Del Piero, Francesco Totti and Vincenzo Iaquinta -- who he believes have not yet reached full match fitness.... | |

| | | Mama bear, three cubs crash birthday party in park | | Posted Sunday, August 27, 2006 4:55:09 AM by Blog57 Team | | A mama black bear and her three cubs looked down from behind the leaves of a large cottonwood tree Wednesday afternoon as a birthday party got under way. While they weren't invited guests, the animals turned out to be the main attraction. It's not clear how long the bears were in the park, but New Mexico Department Game and Fish Officer Donald Garcia suspects that the mother and her three cubs made their way up from the river bosque in search of food. After an exciting rescue, the bears were relocated to the Manzano Mountains. Elisha Olguin, who was sitting on a swing in the playground, was the first to see the bears. The 24-year-old Jarales resident said as she swayed back and forth, she noticed something in the trees at the north end of the Rio Communities park. "I was swinging, and I saw, like, two black figures in the tree," Olguin said.... | |
